“I’m too dark to wear what???” If you haven’t realize by now, I don’t believe in rules. Well, rules that dictate what I do with MY body. I love makeup. I love to put it on. I love to buy it. I love to talk about it. I love to smell it. I love to throw it on my bed and swim on it. Are you getting the idea??? So here I am being a chocolate complexioned woman and was in the store picking up a few items that I absolutely needed – [well not needed, but wanted really bad. I’ve got a problem :(], holding a bright pink lipstick. And the nice lady worker sees me and ever so politely moves me over to the plums and deep berries. With a smile, “This berry would like AMAZING on you!”
I’m looking at her like “Ok….but you don’t think I would look good in this bright pink?” And she replied that warmer colors look better on darker skin. Made sense, thanked her, and continued to browse and ultimately walked out the store empty handed and feeling a little defeated because I was looking for a pink. But I couldn’t help but think, “Was I really too dark for certain colors?”
I am here to tell you that is [excuse my language] POPPY COCK!!! There is no such thing as being too dark for a color. To heck with the naysayers! Wear what you want!
You’re still not convinced you can wear yellow eye shadow and purple lips? That light blue eye shadow reminding you of Mimi from Drew Carey Show? Is that 120 color palette still sitting in the back of your closet?
Never fear! Your resident BFF is here to show you 5 ways to rock bright colors on dark skin:
- Red shadow and nude lips.
Pair a bold color like red with a safer color such as plum, as seen here, or brown, to make it a little more wearable, but not lacking on the bright factor. - Green and Light Pink
Bold eyes paired with a nude pink lip. You can do bold colors. Just pick one focal point. - Orange Lips
Orange looks amazing on chocolate skin! It brings out our warm tones. Pair a bold orange with a chestnut brown or dark purple lip liner. - Yellow shadow and Purple Lips
Ok. Purple is my favorite color. Sue me. lol This is a lighter shade, almost lilac, paired with a lemon colored yellow. - Purple eyes and Pink lips
Seriously, this is the last purple. But purple and pink are an awesome pair together. Here is a shimmery periwinkle purple paired with a bright pink.
Hopefully I have changed your mindset or given you a little inspiration and you will try to be a little bit adventurous with your makeup! At the end of the day, just have fun with it! And whenever someone says you can’t do something, turn around and tell them, “Don’t believe me, just watch, DAHLING…”
